Two Victims Identified in the Providence Campus Attack as Authorities Continue Hunt for Gunman.

Two students who lost their lives in the weekend's mass shooting on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their killer continued following the release by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect questioned in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.

She served as vice-president of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also posted words of sorrow on social media, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her kin and peers, especially her parents.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.

Details of the Attack

Nine more persons were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a search at a hotel about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was being released.

“There is a killer at large,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”

Community Anxiety

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our public”.

The assailant discharged a weapon inside a room in the engineering facility on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a authority reported to the media outlet.

Law enforcement that searched the inn found two handguns and two ammunition clips when the suspect was arrested, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, one student was released from the hospital, stated Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

More Condolences

Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that specific location as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, friends, and peers and grieve for of his potential.”
