Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the images were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
