The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Objections from Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused celebrations throughout the city amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, even after the Egyptian and Iranian football federations voiced objections regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. These events will take place around the tournament group match featuring Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit Pride flags inside the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the fan activities outside of the match venue,” said the vice-president of communications.

Cultural Context Behind the Formal Complaints

Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it did not want to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation also raised “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Symbols

The international federation holds full authority of stadiums on matchdays. While its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of flags being seized.

  • This special fixture was an idea created to showcase the city's longstanding tradition of championing equality.
  • A design contest is underway to create images celebrating the event.
  • Organizers have pledged to ensuring every visitor feel welcome in the city during the 48-team competition.

The Pacific Northwest hosts one of the nation’s largest communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities from every competing country. “We’re committed is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our part of the country,” the statement added.
