Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.

The Cause of the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made remarks after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.

Background of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to the team brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his mentor.
