Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

His attorney submitted the response acting as his counsel in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

His attorney declared he would try to have the legal matter terminated for several reasons including that his the accused, a critic of former President Trump, was being targeted.

Mr Comey was charged just days after Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the court they intended to present various motions to dismiss the case before a legal hearing, claiming the government's case was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was unlawfully appointed to take over the legal matter.

The former director's case was initially overseen by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from the former president after his probe into another rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his legal team and making jokes. He was accompanied by his wife, Patrice Failor and child Maureen, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the magistrate state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in court on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he told the proceedings.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about four months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the time, he was leading an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, the director sparked a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was probing political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against the candidate were never brought, resulting in criticism from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys claim James Comey provided false information to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he misled the Senate by claiming he had not permitted an individual at the FBI to disclose to news outlets data about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and slow" the committee by making false statements to it.

Public Statements

Via social media Mr Comey posted to his Instagram after he was indicted, he said he was wrongly accused and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"Our household have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to challenging Mr Trump," he commented. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

These allegations against Mr Comey surfaced after the former president published on social media insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, charge Mr Comey and others.
