Plans for Putin-Trump Talks Postponed Days After Budapest Talks Announced

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.

Recently the US president said he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest soon to address the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration said the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a meeting was not "needed".

The administration declined to provide further information on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar indicating Trump had pushed him to give up significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on this week Trump supported a truce plan supported by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the war on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Lavrov said on this week, suggesting that freezing the front line would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Moscow's terminology for a series of extensive requirements that involve the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

Zelensky stated discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump last Thursday occurred before rumors that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could theoretically target inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he remarked.
