Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Thrilling Double Overtime Win
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the winning points late in double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their championship campaign with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in a team-high 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in double OT, giving the titleholders a positive start.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points of his own, played a major role together with the game's hero.
"Determination and defense," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or misfortune. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."
Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their arena, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.
The Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the opportunity to secure some payback on this Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from sciatica.
