Mikel Arteta Praises a More Dependable Squad and Reveals Havertz Injury Blow.
The Gunners' boss has expressed confidence that his squad can persist in handling with player absences after revealing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.
Prolonged Recovery for Havertz
The German forward has been absent for months after undergoing an operation on his knee. Originally slated to be available sooner, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when stepping up his rehabilitation and failed to reach “the required stage.”
“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is far more dependable and has increased versatility,” Arteta said.
Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture
This development creates a dilemma for the midweek home game against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also available post-recovery.
Defensive Concerns Persist
Further fitness issues involve defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the weekend encounter. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in central defence for the table-toppers.
Arteta feels the significant outlay on reinforcements ahead of this season has left Arsenal in a more robust situation to navigate such absences.
Squad Depth Key to Premier League Pursuit
Questioned if more options was aiding their championship push, his response was positive. “Yes, since the current term has presented greater challenges in some areas, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he noted.
“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to adapt to new tasks if we are to fight at the highest level. And the example of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”
Arteta's Support for Frustrated Star
Addressing the setback previously mentioned by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the subsequent stage and now it’s looking like we have solved that issue.”
He shared his eagerness to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, personally, I love so much for the qualities he offers to the team, but his personality, his personality. I see him suffer being outside.”
“His fitness history is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I can’t wait to see him return involved playing because I believe it’s going to be a huge lift.”
