Kristi Noem Inspects Portland Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office Amid Right-Wing Figures

Kristi Noem, who holds the position of the head of the Department of Homeland Security, visited the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland on this week. During her visit, she witnessed a limited demonstration outside, which contrasts sharply to the fiery "siege" described by Donald Trump.

Accompanied by Conservative Influencers

Noem was escorted by a set of right-wing figures who were whisked from the airport to the ICE office in her official convoy. DHS has published escalating online posts showing federal agents performing raids and firing crowd control measures at crowds.

Protest Scene

Officers established a perimeter outside the ICE office in the southern Portland area before the secretary’s appearance. A small group demonstrators, among them one wearing a costume of a bird and another as a sea creature, were kept at a distance.

Audio played loudly from a protest encampment nearby, with words about the former president and controversial documents. A demonstrator shouted to a federal recorder filming from the facility's roof, asking whether the homeland security had been referred to as the "propaganda department".

Press Coverage

Members of the press from nonpartisan news outlets were also held behind the security perimeter outside, while the partisan influencers in her party—Benny Johnson, Nick Sortor, and David Media—broadcast social media updates of the Noem participating in federal agents in a prayer session inside, offering a motivational speech, and instructing a member of the Oregon National Guard to "Get ready".

Background Developments

The secretary has previously echoed the president’s assertions that the group of protesters—who have rallied in their limited groups outside the site since June, including one in an amphibian suit—are "extremists" who have placed the building "under siege", making the deployment of federal troops necessary.

Yet, on last weekend, a U.S. judge in the city halted his effort to nationalize local militia, determining that the his assertions that the largely peaceful city was "being destroyed" were "not based on reality".

Following that, the same judge, Judge Immergut—who was appointed to the bench by Trump—extended the decision to prevent guard members from other states from being used in the city. She acted after he reacted to her previous decision by seeking to send members of the another state's militia to Oregon.

Rising Conflicts

Since Donald Trump highlighted the small but persistent protest outside the office and made unsubstantiated allegations that Oregon is "war ravaged", a rising count of his adherents, including conservative personalities, have arrived to challenge the individuals.

Several of these encounters have led to altercations and fistfights, leading to apprehensions by the officers. A conservative personality was taken into custody after he tried to force his way a gathering on a sidewalk near the ICE facility and was involved in a scuffle over an U.S. flag. He had before taken the flag from a protester who was burning it.

The charges against him were eventually dismissed after an protest in partisan press prompted the head of the rights office of the Justice Department, Harmeet Dhillon, to suggest a review of the Portland Police Bureau over alleged political bias.

Two individuals he was involved in an altercation with still are under legal scrutiny.

Official Responses

Over the weekend, Governor Tina Kotek, she, alleged DHS agents in the site of trying to irritate the protesters by using unnecessary levels of tear gas in a residential neighborhood and bringing in conservative social media influencers to film the crowd from the upper level of the site. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," she commented.

A trio of those MAGA-aligned figures were referred to in a law enforcement document last month as "opposing demonstrators" who "repeatedly come back and antagonize the demonstrators until they are confronted or exposed to irritants" and refuse "frequent warnings from police to avoid" the group.

Online Content

Benny Johnson, a ex-reporter who transitioned as a right-wing commentator after being let go from BuzzFeed for content theft, shared a clip of Noem observing from the roof of the site at the small group of protesters below, including an individual who dons a fowl suit to mock the former president. He described the clip of her inspecting the peaceful setting below: "DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stares down army of Antifa and a guy in a chicken suit".

In spite of the contrast between the assertions from Trump and Noem that this facility is "besieged" from "radicals" and visible proof of a handful of individuals in peaceful clothing, the personalities with the secretary continued to describe the protesters as harmful activists.

Discussion with Law Enforcement

While in Portland, Noem also held a discussion with the Portland police chief, Chief Day, who has been depicted as "liberal" in partisan press for permitting his law enforcement to detain Sortor. In a online post on the meeting, Benny Johnson stated that the official had "aligned with violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

Her security detail then drove out the office past a small group of protesters on the exterior, including one in the costume of a bear wearing a hat.
