France advises nationals to depart Mali urgently following jihadist fuel blockade

Fuel queues in Mali
Long queues have been forming at fuel outlets

France has released an pressing advisory for its people in the landlocked nation to depart as quickly as possible, as militant groups persist their restriction of the country.

The Paris's external affairs department advised individuals to depart using airline services while they continue operating, and to avoid surface transportation.

Fuel Crisis Intensifies

A recently imposed petroleum embargo on the West African country, established by an al-Qaeda-linked group has overturned everyday activities in the capital, the capital city, and additional areas of the landlocked Sahel region state - a former French colony.

France's statement occurred alongside the global shipping giant - the largest global maritime firm - stating it was halting its services in Mali, mentioning the blockade and declining stability.

Insurgent Actions

The Islamist organization JNIM has created the blockage by assaulting tankers on main routes.

Mali has limited sea access so all fuel supplies are brought in by highway from neighboring states such as the neighboring country and the coastal nation.

International Response

Last month, the United States representation in the capital declared that secondary embassy personnel and their households would depart the nation during the crisis.

It mentioned the gasoline shortages had affected the supply of electricity and had the "possibility of affecting" the "comprehensive stability environment" in "unforeseen manners".

Political Context

The West African nation is presently governed by a military junta commanded by the military leader, who initially took control in a coup in recent years.

The junta had public approval when it assumed control, promising to address the extended stability issues caused by a separatist rebellion in the northern region by Tuareg communities, which was then hijacked by jihadist fighters.

Global Involvement

The UN peacekeeping mission and France's military had been stationed in the past decade to handle the increasing militant activity.

Both have withdrawn since the armed leadership gained power, and the military government has employed foreign security contractors to address the safety concerns.

However, the jihadist insurgency has endured and significant areas of the north and east of the state persist outside government control.
