Fly-tippers cover field in massive pile of garbage

The area has been labeled an "environmental catastrophe".
A reporter inspected the scene and stated the pile appeared to be "20ft high at least".

Fly-tippers have deposited a huge quantity of waste in a rural area in Oxfordshire.

The "environmental crisis developing in full view" is around 150m (490ft) long and 6m (20ft) in height.

The huge heap has been discovered in a open area adjacent to the River Cherwell close to Kidlington.

Parliament representative raised the issue in parliament, declaring it was "risking an environmental emergency".

An environmental charity reported the unauthorized rubbish dump was created approximately a month ago by an criminal network.

"This constitutes an environmental crisis developing in plain sight.

"Every day that elapses elevates the risk of hazardous run-off getting into the river system, polluting wildlife and endangering the condition of the whole catchment.

"The Environment Agency must respond now, not in the distant future, which is their usual action timeframe."

Legal prohibition had been established by the Environment Agency.

It is difficult to recognize any specific bits of rubbish as it looks to have been pulverized with soil mixed in.

Part of the rubbish from the top of the pile has collapsed and is now just five feet from the stream.

The River Cherwell is a feeder stream of the River Thames, which indicates it runs through Oxford before joining the Thames.

Elected official said the cost of removing the garbage would be high

The MP petitioned the administration for help to clear the illegal site before it triggered a fire or was washed away into the water network.

Speaking to parliament members on Thursday, he stated: "Illegal operators have deposited a mountain of unlawful polymer rubbish... amounting to hundreds of tonnes, in my electoral area on a riverside area alongside the River Cherwell.

"Stream volumes are growing and heatmaps show that the garbage is also increasing in temperature, raising the threat of fire.

"Regulatory body said it has limited capabilities for compliance, that the anticipated price of disposal is greater than the complete twelve-month funding of the regional government."

Cabinet member commented the government had taken over a failing waste industry that had resulted in an "epidemic of illegal waste disposal".

She advised MPs the agency had issued a access ban to halt more access to the area.

In a announcement, the organization confirmed it was investigating the situation and asked for evidence.

It said: "We understand the community's anger about occurrences like this, which is why we take action against those responsible for illegal dumping."

A recently published report found efforts to address significant illegal dumping have been "critically overlooked" despite the situation becoming bigger and more advanced.

Government advisors suggested an autonomous "thorough" examination into how "endemic" environmental offenses is addressed.
