Escaping Solo Parent Holiday Hell to Pet-Sitting Heaven: One Parent's Journey

Following my relationship concluded, I naively believed holidays being a solo mother could be straightforward. I soon realized they were either extremely costly, or seemed only suitable for “conventional” households, or else were far too cheap that I came home even more exhausted than before I started.

Initial Holiday Experiences

My first attempt, tenting alongside companions, was fine until the moment came to pack up our shelter. Hours of wrestling with it in the heat afterward, I hated the outdoors. Next, the adventure holiday for solo-parent households. Rappelling and caving were brilliant, but sleeping in a bunkbed ruined my spine. We tried a low-cost package on the island, but the hordes of traditional families were overwhelming, and pool-side conversations with fellow ladies fizzled out since I wasn’t come with a convenient husband for their own husbands to talk to. An excursion to Mallorca alongside a pal and her children was wonderful, but the cost was eye-watering.

Finding House-Sitting

Then, last autumn, an acquaintance asked if we’d house-sit her pets in Devon as she attended to a ceremony. For one tranquil weekend, we walked along the shore, and curled up near the fireplace at night. That led to house-sitting for her associate in the region, which also went well. Inspired, I paid an annual £99 membership to join a house-sitting platform, through which, by caring for people’s pets, you reside at their residences without cost. Within a few days, I’d arranged a 10-day pet-sit within the county, looking after a retriever named Buzz while his owners traveled overseas.

Our daily walks gave us the opportunity to discover breathtaking nature spots.

This marked the initial sit for unknown individuals, but all anxiety dissipated the moment we arrived the beautiful four-bedroom house and met the calm Buzz, who lived for belly scratches. Our daily dog walks offered us the opportunity to explore magnificent nature spots, and, once we returned home, we were able to relax in the garden for meaningful conversations about our favourite “Ghosts” characters in the television series. There were any expensive tourist traps to wander around – instead, we browsed bookstores, indulged to nail care, and went on paddling excursions. I felt more carefree and happier than I had in years, and could feel the connection alongside my child Polly strengthen daily. I don’t hesitant to admit that I wept from joy. Life seemed achievable once more.

Could House-Sitting Right for You?

Pet-sitting may not be suitable for all. Certain individuals want no responsibilities on holiday apart from selecting their upcoming beverage, aren’t fond of dogs or cats, or perhaps find it strange regarding staying in a someone else’s bed, emptying their dishwasher, and taking out their bins. However the soothing pace of ordinary living, with work stripped out and fresh locations to explore, is perfect for me.

This prevents me from descending into complete idleness, which leaves me feeling twitchy and oddly empty. Moreover, monetarily, house-sitting is a life-saver for a solo mother. A 10-day getaway in a comparable house in the same area we stayed would set me approximately £2,500 on Airbnb.

An Alternative Outlook

As for residing in a another person’s home, I found it enriching. Even though pet-sitting is a transaction, it’s also an expression of faith among strangers and creatures, that has unleashed the finest version of me – my patient, caring and balanced side, overflowing with gratitude for the people and locations we discover. I have scheduled an additional short break away, looking after a sighthound within verdant Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to try house-sitting overseas. Thanks to a bit of creative planning, we are able to see the world from the coziness of home – it just turns out to be another person’s.
