Devastated HK Inhabitants Stunned as Large-Scale Blaze Engulfs Housing Blocks
"Getting closer to the scene, the temperature rises and you can sense it, with the smoke being extremely dense."
Young scholar a local student was among the numerous people attracted to the site of a fatal inferno that ravaged large portions of the eight-block residential estate in the city's Tai Po district.
No fewer than over three dozen residents have perished in the recent destructive blaze so far, with many still not located, leading to expectations that this figure will probably rise.
"We're facing a catastrophe," the student remarked about the incident, noting that he had seen a victim being taken away from the location.
More than a one thousand further people were forced to evacuate the development as the fire spread, with some making their way to established centers that have been set up to accommodate them.
The inferno is slowly being controlled, but officials indicate they do not know when it will be completely extinguished.
Blazes could be observed emanating from separate homes as countless onlookers looked on in silence.
"I feel overwhelmed. There are so numerous neighbours and friends. I do not know what is happening now. Observe, all the homes are just burning. I cannot determine what to do. I pray the government can help us to settle down after this."
One woman explained that her friends live inside the structure and she was waiting to learn if they were able to escape.
A long-term resident, who has lived in block two of the residential estate for in excess of forty years, described listening to "a tremendous explosion" and seeing flames ignite in a adjacent structure.
"I promptly went inside to gather my belongings," the 66-year-old resident remarked.
"I don't even know how I feel currently. I'm just thinking about where I'm going to stay tonight because I almost certainly will not go back home."
Although the source of the blaze that consumed the numerous tall buildings remains undetermined, the flames are suspected to have spread quickly through the construction framework that enveloped the structures, which were in the process of refurbishments.
Several residents have demonstrated anger that such a large-scale blaze could have occurred and challenged the emergency measures.
