Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
